You will want to arrange your flight into
Cancun from your point of origin. Once in Cancun, if your group is all
traveling together, you will be picked up at the airport in a comfortable,
air-conditioned car for your ground transportation to Xcalak along the
Costa Maya. If you group is arriving at a variety of different times,
it might be a good idea to pick a meeting place in Cancun in order for
the first arrivals to enjoy the beach area rather than waiting at the
airport. We can arrange with the driver where he is to pick you up.
The
drive is about 5 hours, and you will see many interesting villages and
beautiful scenery. Xcalak is a remote area that takes some time to get
to, but it is well worth it. Because of its remoteness, it has limited
visitor traffic, keeping the fishing pressure minimal.
THE GUIDES
Our guides are locals who are very knowledgeable
about the area and its fisheries. They are trained by Alejandro Vega,
aka Sandflea, who is commissioned by the government to train guides on
the Caribbean Coast of Mexico. They can take you to the areas that provide
you with the best chance for getting into bonefish, permit and baby tarpon.
THE FISHING
Anglers
target bonefish and permitthat roam the skinny waters. The bonefish average
2 - 4 pounds, with very little fishing pressure, and chances at larger
fish. Permit are also present on the flats in good numbers. The average
size is less than 5 pounds, but 10-pound fish are caught occasionally
every year. Tarpon are scattered in the lagoons and on the oceanside and
are found baby size to over 100 pounds. You will fish extensive backwaters
and bays, along with the oceanside flats, providing a good variety of
fly fishing opportunities.
