travel information

Getting There: To reach Xcalak, it is best to fly into Cancun. There are several flights daily on major carriers into Cancun. Once in Cancun, if your group is all traveling together, you will be picked up at the airport for your ground transportation in a comfortable, air-conditioned car for your trip to Xcalak. The drive is about 5 hours from Cancun, and it is extremely beautiful. If your group is arriving at a variety of different times, it might be a good idea to pick a meeting place in Cancun in order for the first arrivals to enjoy the beach area rather than waiting at the airport. We can arrange with the driver where he is to pick you up.

If you choose to spend the night in the area to rest before heading to Xcalak, we would recommend staying in Playa del Carmen. It is a beautiful area just south of Cancun, and away from the crowded hotel area of Cancun. The hotels also tend to be a little less expensive. We can provide you with accommodation options if you are interested.

Passports: A valid US passport is th e best piece of identification to have when traveling to Mexico. If you do not have a passport, an original birth certificate and photo identification will be sufficient. You will be required to go through customs upon arrival in Mexico and show your proof of citizenship. You will be given a tourist card which will be required for you to exit the country, so make sure to keep it where you will have access to it upon departure.

Visa Requirements: There is no US visa required for travel to Mexico.

Money: The Mexican currency is the peso. It is easy to use US dollars through Mexico, although you will obtain a better exchange rate by using a credit card or withdrawing cash from an ATM. You will want to make sure to use an ATM in Cancun, as many of the smaller places do not have them.

Water: Many of the hotels provide purified tap water that you can drink, although we still rely on bottled water to be safe. You should check with the front desk of the hotel when you check-in.

Health Requirements: There are no immunizations required for entry into Mexico. For the latest information on health and immunization requirements worldwide, you may visit the Center for Disease Control web-site at www.cdc.gov. We recommend travel insurance in case of any emergency that would require imminent transportation to the US.

Travel Insurance: We strongly recommend travel insurance for your trip to Mexico. We have taken great precautions in providing a trip that is safe and rewarding. In the event that something unexpected were to happen, it would be wise to have prepared in advance by purchasing travel insurance. Evacuation insurance is available for minimal coverage, and complete travel insurance is available for providing help with lost baggage, changed flights, etc. We can provide you with the necessary insurance information.
