gear

Xcalak is a great saltwater destination giving you the chance to hook a variety of fish. The following suggestions will help you enjoy your time in Mexico and assure that you have accounted for the proper equipment and clothing. It is wise to come fully prepared with fly fishing gear, flies and lures since there is no access to these supplies once you are in Xcalak.

Bonefish

  • 7-9 weight fast action rod
  • eight forward, floating line with saltwater taper
  • Disc drag, large arbor reel with at least 200 yards of backing
  • 9 ft-12 ft leaders with 8-12 lb. clear monofilament or fluorocarbon tippet

Permit

  • 8-10 weight rods
  • Floating saltwater line, and clear intermediate sinking line
  • Disc drag, large arbor reel with at least 200 yards of backing
  • 9-12 ft leaders with 8-12 lb. clear monofilament or fluorocarbon  tippet

Tarpon

  • For the fly fisher:
  • 8-10 weight rods
  • Floating saltwater line and clear intermediate sinking line
  • Disc drag, large arbor reel with at least 300 yards of backing
  • 6-9 ft leaders with 15 lb. clear monofilament or fluorocarbon and  60 lb. shock tippet

Snook

  • 9 or 10 weight rod similar to tarpon rod
  • Floating saltwater line, and full sink line for bright light conditions
  • 9-12 ft leaders with 20 lb. clear mono and 60 lb. shock tippet

A large arbor reel is an advantage as well as extra spools with backing and extra fly lines. Remember that it is virtually impossible to get gear once you are in Xcalak.
