Xcalak
is a great saltwater destination giving you the chance to hook a variety
of fish. The following suggestions will help you enjoy your time in Mexico
and assure that you have accounted for the proper equipment and clothing.
It is wise to come fully prepared with fly fishing gear, flies and lures
since there is no access to these supplies once you are in Xcalak.
Bonefish
- 7-9 weight fast
action rod
- eight forward,
floating line with saltwater taper
- Disc drag, large
arbor reel with at least 200 yards of backing
- 9 ft-12 ft leaders
with 8-12 lb. clear monofilament or fluorocarbon tippet
Permit
- 8-10 weight rods
- Floating saltwater
line, and clear intermediate sinking line
- Disc drag, large
arbor reel with at least 200 yards of backing
- 9-12 ft leaders
with 8-12 lb. clear monofilament or fluorocarbon tippet
Tarpon
- For the fly fisher:
- 8-10 weight rods
- Floating saltwater
line and clear intermediate sinking line
- Disc drag, large
arbor reel with at least 300 yards of backing
- 6-9 ft leaders
with 15 lb. clear monofilament or fluorocarbon and 60 lb.
shock tippet
Snook
- 9 or 10 weight
rod similar to tarpon rod
- Floating saltwater
line, and full sink line for bright light conditions
- 9-12 ft leaders
with 20 lb. clear mono and 60 lb. shock tippet
A
large arbor reel is an advantage as well as extra spools with backing
and extra fly lines. Remember that it is virtually impossible to get gear
once you are in Xcalak.
