TARPON
     When it comes to fly preference, tarpon can go from greedy to fickle in a matter of hours. Slight variations in shape and color can often make a difference in the number of fish you'll catch.

Flies:

  • Black Death: sizes 6/0,4-2/0 (2-3 each size)
  • Cockroach: sizes 6/0,4-2/0 (2-3 each size)
  • Stu Apte : orange/yellow sizes 6/0, 4-2/0 (2-3 each size)
  • Chico's Shallow Water Tarpon: burnt orange/grizzly, blue/grizzly, yellow/grizzly, green/grizzly, sizes 6/0, 4-2/0 (2-3 each size, each color)

Fly Gear

  • 8 weight rod with floating line
  • 10 weight rod wi th intermediate sink and 200 grain sink tip lines
  • 12 weight rod with 300-400 grain sink tip lines
  • Floating saltwater line and clear intermediate sinking line
  • Disc drag, large arbor reel with at least 250 yards of 30lb. backing
  • Leaders for big tarpon, 6 foot, 80lb shock tippet
  • Leaders for baby tarppon, 9 foot, 40lb

SNOOK

Flies:

  • Lefty's Deceiver: red/yellow , green/white, size 2/0 (quantity 6)
  • Saltwater poppers: yellow/red, blue/white, red/white, size 2/0 (q uantity 6)

Fly Gear

  • 9 or 10 weight rod similar to tarpon rod
  • Floating saltwater line, and full sink line for bright light conditions
  • 9-12 ft leaders with 20 lb. clear mono and 60 lb. shock tippet

     A large arbor reel is an advantage as well as extra spools with backing and extra fly lines. Remember that it is virtually impossible to get gear once you are in Xcalak.
