Now
used worldwide, Spey flies' origin is unique to the River Spey. The subdued
colors and flowing hackle are exemplary ties for the Scottish waters in
clear conditions. Fully dressed Atlantic salmon flies are the choice for
high, slightly colored water. Either way, the size changes by season based
on the water flow on the river. .

Fishing gear can be approached in one of
two ways: you can fish the Classic Spey style with a two handed rod, or
if you prefer, you can fish with a one-handed rod. There is a wonderful
fly shop in town if you find that you were remiss in bringing any gear.
They are also very helpful with renting bulky equipment, such as waders
and flotation harnesses, that might be easier to rent than bring yourself.
The weather is generally between 43 degrees F and 65 degrees F, and it
will probably rain more often than not. Make sure you are prepared with
good rain gear and waders.
A
flotation harness is required while fishing the Upper Castle Grant Beat.
