The
Bahamas is a great place to experience premiere flats fishing. Rickmon
Bonefish Lodge provides an intense fishing program combined with beautiful,
waterfront accommodations.
GETTING THERE
You
can either fly into Marsh Harbor on Abaco with a regularly scheduled flight,
or take a private charter from Florida. The flight takes about 1 hour.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your
hosts, Monique and Ricardo Burrows, owners and operators of Rickmon Bonefish
Lodge. Their warm hospitality and extensive knowledge of area fishing
gives you a prime advantage in stalking the bonefish and permit around
the island. They will get you settled into your room and converse with
you about your trip. They will be available throughout your trip to answer
any questions you may have, or provide help when needed.
Your fishing day will begin with breakfast
in the well-appointed restaurant. Continental breakfast items combined
with hot entrees like pancakes or bacon and eggs give you a good start
for your day of fishing.
Your guides are local fisherman who pride
themselves on their bonefishing guide skills. Your head guide is lodge
owner Ricardo Burrows who has lived and fished the waters around Sandy
Point for many years. The guides at Sandy Point are used by all three
lodges in the area, but advance planning will ensure that you will have
a great guide for your trip. The guides have good eyes for spotting fish,
a warm demeanor, and they are always enthusiastic about the fishing success
of the guests.
This
area of the Bahamas offers great fishing opportunities both for numbers
of bonefish and size. The average bonefish are 3-6 pounds, with larger
fish being a common catch. Permit, snapper, jacks and barracuda also inhabit
this area and can be an added challenge.
You will enjoy fishing some of the extensive
flats that create the fishing environment around Sandy Point. There are
about 50 miles of uninhabited coastline from Sandy Point up to Coopers
Town. The flats here are beautiful white sand, with some turtle grass.
You will find opportunities to both wade
the firmer flats, and fish from
the boat on some of the softer flats.
You may also have the opportunity to fish
both Gorda Cay and Moore's Island during your trip depending on weather
conditions. These islands are surrounded by beautiful white sandy flats
that are home to schools of bonefish.
After your hard day of fishing, you will
return to the lodge to relax before dinner. You may want to enjoy your
air-conditioned room for a bit, or possibly sit on the expansive deck
and look out over the water.
At the end of a great day of fishing, you will find a carefully prepared
dinner of local Bahamian dishes with such delights as conch chowder, fish
and vegetables.
