If
you have heard of Patagonia's excellent trout fishing that, then chances
are the San Huberto lodge and dry fly fishing on the Malleo River rings
a bell. It is one of the oldest and most popular angling destinations
in northern Patagonia. Located near the town of Junin de Los Andes, the
lodge sits on a 25,000 acre estancia where over 20 private miles of the
Malleo are accessible to guests only. There is more water to fish here
than most people have vacation time for. The lodge is decorated with years
of red stags hunting paraphernalia reflecting it's original purpose.
The Lodge (Pictures
are coming soon!)
The
San Huberto Hosteria or lodge is run and owed by Carmen and Carlos Olsen
and the Olsen family. What used to be excellent hunting accommodations
for deer and wild boar hunters is now a famous and beautiful fishing lodge.
It has 6 rooms, holding a max of 12 quests with twin beds. Like all Argentines,
the Olsen family finds it second nature to greet you warmly and assure
your expectations are exceeded everyday. Your experience at this destination
will go talked about with great fondness
for years to come.
If you are hoping to stay at this lodge,
we recommend that you call us as soon as possible to secure your space.
We also suggest that you couple this lodge with another one of our fishing
destination so to ensure a well rounded Patagonia experience.
Fishing the Malleo
While staying at the San Huberto lodge you
will fish exclusively the Malleo river, however you will be hard pressed
to fish all of the private waters available. In the upper reaches of the
river, the waters are slow and meandering providing a challenging and
equally rewarding experience. This section is well loved by spring creek
enthusiasts. The middle canyon section has faster current with more difficult
wading and accessibility, however, it is a favorite for those who like
to venture on the road less traveled and reap the benefits. The lower
portions of the Malleo offer great fishing in pools, riffles and along
the willow lined banks.
Although the Malleo is fished all season
long, the higher waters levels in the spring months make a opportunity
for great ra
inbow fishing on the tributary, Huaca Mamuil. Through out
the season dry flies are used however, in the summer months hatches are
prevalent making dry fly action is unsurpassed anywhere in Patagonia.
The catching is fly fishing only, catch
and release and all wading. The browns and rainbows average from 1.5 to
3 pounds although an occasional 6 pounder shakes up the days average.
Enjoy catching lots of trout on dry flies while
once in a while gazing up to see the lazy grassy meadows and the spectacular
Lanin Volcano in the back ground.
