tackle and flies

Patagonia, Argentina is a great winter getaway with clear running streams full of wild trout. It is important to remember that you will be remotely located, and it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to acquire any fishing gear or personal effects once you are on your trip. The following suggestions will help you enjoy your time in Patagonia and assure that you have accounted for the proper equipment.

FLY RODS:

  • Two rods-5 and 6 weights, make sure you have a back-up rod since you will not have access to additional equipment.
Travel rods in 3-4 piece construction are helpful for carry-on purposes.

REELS:

  • A reel capable of handling at least 75 yards of 20 lb. backing is preferable.
  • Bring extra spools with backing and extra fly lines just in case.

LINE: You are going to want two different set-ups for your trip.

  • Weight forward or double taper, floating line for most of your river fishing.

  • Shooting line for streamer fishing. A Teeny 130 is highly recommendedand a Teeny 200 is recommended for experienced users.
  • Back-up fly lines are recommended since you will not have access to these once you are there.

LEADERS AND TIPPET:
Leaders:

  • 9 ft, 5x and 4x leaders (6 each)
  • 7 1/2 ft, 3x and 2x leaders (6 each)
    Tippet:
  • Tippet material with diameters 6x through 2x (at least 1 of each spool)
