Esquel

Traveling 4 hours south of Bariloche is the smaller town of Esquel. Esquel is known for it's ski resort and for it's many different fishing waters. Just outside the town limits is a small Hosteria or lodge called La Chacra. La Chacra, meaning The Farm, is a one story house built in the 70's and can hold 10 anglers. It is a simple and comfortable place that is mostly remembered by it's 60' and 70's architecture and the fabulous food. A single Welsh woman named Reine and her daughter own and run the lodge. They have made the lodge a favorite stop among our quests by their warm hospitality and unique characters and by excellent dishes with which they surprise us every night. A well stocked bar greets anglers upon return from a long day on the river.

From La Charca, we fish several different waters. The Arroyo Pescado and the Rio Grande are probably the most famous. The Arroyo Pescado is certainly the most well known and productive spring creek in all of Argentina and is a must see for anglers fishing in this area. The Rio Grande is a large river that is the last link in Argentina for the chain of rivers and lakes that starts in the Cholila Valley. This tail water travels a relatively short distance before it crosses the Chilean border and is then called the Futaleufu. Rainbows and browns are plentiful in this wide and sometimes deep river. Brown trout of enormous size are caught here and are certainly the target. We fish two different sections of the Rio Grande using both dry flies such as hoppers and streamers of all kinds.
