.For Trout

RODS

  • Two rods-5 and 6 weights, make sure you have a back-up rod since you will not have access to additional equipment.
    Travel rods in 3-4 piece construction are helpful for carry-on purposes.

REELS:

  • A reel capable of handling at least 75 yards of 20 lb. backing is preferable.
  • Bring extra spools with backing and extra fly lines just in case.

LINE: You are going to want two different set-ups for your trip.

  • Weight forward or double taper, floating line for most of your river fishing.

  • Shooting line for streamer fishing. A Teeny 130 is highly recommendedand a Teeny 200 is recommended for experienced users.
  • Back-up fly lines are recommended since you will not have access to these once you are there.

LEADERS AND TIPPET:
Leaders:

  • 9 ft, 5x and 4x leaders (6 each)
  • 7 1/2 ft, 3x and 2x leaders (6 each)
    Tippet:
  • Tippet material with diameters 6x through 2x (at least 1 of each spool)

FLIES:
The trout of Patagonia are not highly selective, and most of the time they are looking for "bugs" not a particular species.

The major difference in fishing these waters is that anglers will want to be well stocked with dragoon flies, damsel and caddis flies or small stimulators

  • All Black Turks Tarantulas with rubber legs, white wing: size 8 quantity, 5
  • Dragoon fly patterns, blue and red: sizes 10, 8, 6 quantity 3 each
  • Damsel fly patterns, red, blue and green: sizes 10, 8 quantity 3 each
  • Seal fur leeches, weighted body only: red size 10, 8 quanty 4
  • Beadhead Olive Wooly Bugger: sizes 4, 6, 8, 10, quantity 3-4 of each
  • Beadhead Black Wooly Bugger: sizes 4, 6, 8, quantity 3 each
  • Chernobyl Ant: sizes 6, 8, quantity 5
  • Bitch Creeks, orange and red: sizes 6, 8, quantity 3
  • Beadhead Olive Rabbit Strip: sizes 4, 6, 8 quantity 3 each
  • Stimulators light green and yellow: sizes 14, 12, 10, quantity 3 of each
  • Royal Wulff: sizes 16, 14, quantity 3 each
  • Elk Hair Caddis: tan or brow: sizes 14, 16, 18 quantity 4 each
  • Goddard Caddis: sizes 14, 16, quantity 4 each
  • Soft Hackle Wet Flies: sizes 14, 12, any typical pattern like Peacock, Yellow and Black Soft Hack Flies, beadheads preferred. Quantity 5 or more assorted
  • Beadhead Nymphs: sizes 16, 14, 12, i.e. Prince, Tan Hares Ear, quantity 12 or more assorted

For Salmon



RODS AND LINES:

  • An 8 wt. rod is preffered, however, a 7 wt. will work as well.
  • You will want one floating line and one sinking tip or shooting head line for the 8 weight rod.

REELS:

  • A reel capable of handling at least 75 yards of 20 lb. backing is preferable.
  • Bring extra spools with backing and extra fly lines just in case.

LEADERS AND TIPPET:
Leaders:

  • 9 ft. 1x, 0x leaders (2 each)
  • 7 1/2 ft. 10 -11 pound tippets
    Tippet:
  • Maxima tippet material, spools of 8-12 pound.

FLIES:

  • Bitch Creek, sizes 6,4 quantity 3
  • Beadhead Olive Rabbit Strip: sizes 4,6 quantity 3 each
  • Beadhead Olive Wooly Bugger: sizes 4, 6 quantity 3-4 of each
  • Beadhead Black Wooly Bugger: sizes 4, 6 quantity 3 each
  • Bring you favorite salmon flies.

Added flash and rubber legs to any woolly buggers or streamers can be a bonus for both salmon and trout fishing.
