The Brazilian Amazon is an exciting and unique area of the world that offers an unforgettable fishing experience. Because of its remote location in Brazil, it is very difficult to acquire any fishing gear or personal effects once you are at the lodge. Your guide will have a small selections of lures and hooks, but it would be wise to prepare in advance by making sure you have all of the necessary equipment.

FLY FISHING:

  • Rods: An 8-10 weight rod will be sufficient for the species that are caught on a fly.
  • Reels: You will want at least two set-ups - one with a floating line, and the other with a 10' sink tip line. Both will need at least 100 yds of backing.
  • Leaders: Short leaders of 4-6 feet work well for the majority of fish.
  • Bring both 30 lb. shock tippet and 30 lb. wire leaders.
  • Travel rods in 3-4 piece construction are helpful for carry-on purposes. Extra rod , reel, and fly lines are strongly suggested.

    SPIN FISHING:
  • Rods: A medium spinning rod will be sufficient for most of the fish, and will allow you to feel the action.
  • Reels: 15-20 lb. test line works well, with at least 200 yds. of backing.
  • An extra reel is a bonus if you have room, as well as extra mono.

    BAIT CASTING:

  • Rods: A light or medium weight bait casting rod will be sufficient.
  • Reels: 20-30 lb. test line works well, with at least 200 yds of backing.

    CATFISH GEAR:
  • Rod: A heavy weight bait caster will be a necessity for catching the large jau and piraiba.
  • Reels: 70-100 lb. test line is important with at least 300 yds. of backing.
  • Leaders: Heavy wire leaders will improve your chances of landing the catfish.

    OTHER GEAR:
  • Hooks in sizes 4 - 10/0 as specified in the Amazon flies section below.
  • Wire in weights 30, 40, 50
    Sliding sinkers from 1-3 ozs.
  • Nippers, wire cutter, hook hone, forceps and pliers
  • Reel lubricant, line cleaner, rod and reel repair kit

Remember that most of the fish have sharp teeth and will destroy your line, leaders and lures readily. You will want to be prepared with plenty of extras .
