gear and tackle

     You will be in the middle of the wilderness in Alaska. For obvious reasons, you must bring all of your own equipment to ensure that you have a successful trip. The guides will have some extra equipment on hand, but it is always nice to have your own back-up.

For trout, grayling & char:

  • 3-6 weight rod
  • 150 yards 20 lb. backing
  • 1 floating line (3-6 weight)
  • 1 sink tip line (6-7 weight
    with 15-20' sinking tip (5-6" per second sink rate)

    For sockeye, chum, silver and pink salmon:
  • 7-9 weight rod
  • 200 yards 35 lb. backing
  • 1 sink tip line (7-9 weight) with 15-20' sinking tip (5-6" per second sink rate)

    For king salmon:
  • 10-12 weight rod
  • 300 yards 35 lb. backing
  • 1 sink tip line (10-12 weight) with 15-20' sinking tip (5-6" per second sink rate)

 


  • Leaders and Accessories:
  • 8-10' leader for floating lines
  • 3' leaders for sink tip lines
  • Tippet: 1 spool each of 8 lb., 20 lb., 2 spools each of 10 lb., 12 lb., 15 lb.
  • Split shot size bb and larger
  • Paste floatant
  • Strike indicator

Gear
    The following is a list of gear that is recommended. Always choose materials that are warm when wet - wool, polar fleece, etc. The weather is usually 45-55 degrees F at night, and 55-75 degrees F during the day most of the summer. It is more likely to rain than not, so the most important item is good rain gear and waders. Most of the days in the summer are rainy, and bugs can be a nuisance if there is no wind. Make sure you are prepared with proper clothing to keep warm.

  • Sleeping bag rated to 20 degrees
  • Insulated sleeping pad
  • Rain jacket and pants
  • Medium weight windproof jacket
  • 2 fleece pullovers or wool sweaters
  • 2 warm shirts
  • 1-2 fleece pants to wear under waders
  • 2 turtlenecks
  • 1 set long underwear
  • 3-7 pair underwear
  • 3 T-shirts
  • 4 pair wool or fleece socks
  • 1 wool or fleece hat
  • 1 cap with brim
  • 1 pair jeans or cotton pants
  • 1 pair waterproof boots
  • 1 pair fishing gloves
  • 1 polarized sunglasses
  • Personal toiletries
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera and film
  • Waders and repair kit
  • 1 small towel
  • 1 bug head net
  • Reading/writing materials
